For Week 11...

No blog, just getting the final project together.

I want you to bring hard copies of your complete designs for all three projects for pin up and turn in, and a CD of everything for me to keep.

Here are the parameters for Project 3 again:

Project III is the final component of a three-part series of designs that culminate in a finished lighting, acoustical and seating design for a performance venue. Project III will add to the efforts of Project I (creating the shell of the building that houses the performance space and laying out the public spaces and audience seating) and Project II, which adds to the performance venue acoustical treatment and public lighting (this is commercial interior lighting, not stage lighting).

Based on research we began in class and on the blog, you will create Project III:

A sectional drawing of the stage house and auditorium that includes stage lights and curtains

Lighting calculations of your choice for both the stage house and auditorium (one calculation if it is actually one room)

Research, drawings and specification sheets that describe your stage lights and their use

Research, drawings and specifications for stage curtains, including main drapes, travelers, borders and legs

A light plot (plan drafting, separate from your RCP) of your stage lighting fixtures

Include samples of process work and research imagery whenever you can,

cut and paste everything so that all is turned in in 11" x 17" format

A catalog PDF that can be useful; www.norcostco.com and a great stage lighting manufacturer: www.etcconnect.com

See you Monday!

Blog for Week 10 (after field trip)...Don't forget the Week 9 blog before the field trip

Blog: Lighting calculations and research on the various types lighting certification (web searches, periodicals and library searches).

For Week 10:
Bring everything you need to class for working on your projects. I want to spend time with each of you individually.

If you need computers and don't have a laptop. We'll spread around the building as needed.

I also arranged for Drew to make the AutoCAD program work in our classroom, so that terminal is available as well.

Other than work on a simple lighting calculation, this will be a studio day. The culmination of all three of your projects will be due at the top of class on Week 11:

Projects I, II and III• Burn copies of your assignments to CD for me to keep (scan non-digital work)
• Turn in hard copies of your assignments on 11” x 17” paper (DO NOT STAPLE). Copies only as these will go into permanent files and will not be returned to you.

Off you go!

Blog for Week 9 (before field trip)...

Blog for Week 8...

In addition to the "default" blog info on the syllabus for week 8 (Review of Lighting I text Chapter 16 and research on RCP’s and lighting specifications)

Residential Lighting, A Practical Guide by Whitehead

I want you to blog on the 5 photos you found in class:

Select five photographs of public interiors. For each space, identify the purpose of the space and describe the lighting systems. Identify the information from your Chapter 11 handout that should be gathered for a detailed analysis. Use the functions of light terminology to describe the use of light in the spaces (accent, ambient, task, decorative).

Off you go.

Blog for Week 7...

In addition to the "default" blog from the syllabus: Types of stage lights and how they are used (web search, periodicals and library searches), I also want you to blog on the handout I gave you in class- "Lighting Design Process: Contract Documents Through Postoccupaqncy Evaluation."

Extra copies of the handout are in my mailbox in Academic Affairs at Ai.

As usual, you can blog on any links that I send you, and of course on new stuff you find that is at all related to lighting.

Off you go.

Blog for Week 6/Midterm...

Midterm Exercises
ID 1608 Principles of Lighting II: Commercial
Instructor: Tim O’Donnell

This week the blog and your in class exercise are going to be combined together to complete your midterm quiz requirement.

Ignore this week’s “default” blog on the syllabus and concentrate on information found in the handout for blogging: “Lighting Design Process: Project Planning Through Design Development”.

In your blog, include links to articles and your thoughts and reviews of them.

For turn in to the drop off, create programming questionnaire sheets from the handout:
“Lighting Design Process: Project Planning Through Design Development”. Relate this programming information to Projects I, II, and III we are doing for this class.

From the handout:

Table 11.1 p. 219-221
Table 11.2 p. 222
Table 11.3 p. 223

Wherever it seems plausible, generate points that cover acoustics and seating issues as well.

Some of the points in this handout do not apply to your particular projects. Answer them anyway by creating a hypothetical situation that covers that premise.

Off you go.

Blog for Week 5...

So the blog this week is the "default" from the syllabus:
• For week 5: Chapter 11 Electricity, Chapter 12 Luminaires, Chapter 13 Design

As usual, blog from what you discover in the text. Somebody will be the first to really put the best insight into their blog. Everyone who comes after would then be served by finding articles on the web and in architectural and theatrical lighting magazines to comment upon.

Those of you who have not blogged yet, go back and look at some of the previous posts to see the style I am looking for (especially in the comments and link posting being done by Meryl and Maranda).

Remember, minimum of three trips to the blog per week for interraction with classmates.

Off you go.

Blog for Weeks 3 and 4

Remember no class on week 3. Wewill go for the "default" from the syllabus for this one:

• For week 3: Chapter 5 Daylight, Chapter 6 Incandescent Lamps, Chapter 7 Discharge Lamps, Chapter 8 Auxiliary Equipment
• For Week 4: Seating in performance spaces (web search, periodicals and library searches), Chapter 9 Light Control, Chapter 10 Photometrics

So there are 7 discussion points. No need to reproduce all the info from the text here each of you point out what you see as the highlights of each chapter. Also, you can and should seek out other sources of this information for comparison and contrast.

Remember to visit the blog often as I am looking for this to interactive discussion involving the whole class.

Here are some links that can help you:

Blog for Week 2: Design Standards for Performing Arts Spaces

Hello ID1608!

Use the chapter handout plus periodicals and web searches to research and understand the space needs of performing arts venues. Pay specific attention to: audience and stage configurations, seating standards, acoustical considerations, lighting (both commercial and stage use). Make sure also to consider sustainability, economics and ergonomics. Where possible, address aesthetics as well.

Remember, this is about research and dialogue with the whole class contributing information.

Off you go!
